Lao street boys have more chance to get jobs
(KPL) Food lovers have more chances to eat good quality of Lao traditional dishes and have an opportunity to help street children just by going to a new restaurant opened last week.
This restaurant named “Makphet” is located on Saysettha road, Vientiane, aiming at helping street boys in Vientiane to get jobs and income.
“This restaurant is one of many activities for building a sustainable street children project in Laos-implementation and capacity building (Peuan Mit) and is in response to disadvantaged children demand,” said Mr Prasith Dethphommathep, Acting Head of Social Welfare Department.
“The street children would have more options in jobs opportunities instead of spending their daily lives alone on streets and this project will help them being self-reliant and as well would help them ceasing living on streets”, Mr Prasith continued.
Lao food dishes made in a hygienic surrounding are available for both Lao and foreigners food lovers. Most of the raw materials for cooking are available domestically and foreign chefs and cooks teach street boys closely.
Joining to open “Makphet” restaurant were Mr Phasith Dethphomathep, Acting Head of Social Welfare Department and Mrs Olivia Yambi, a resident representative of UNICEF to Laos and other officials concerned.
The street children have helped the project “Peuan Mit” to be sustainable in collaboration between the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and Friends International.
The project is under operation, which has a three-year period, and started in May 2004 with a financial support from UNICEF to Laos and other NGOs.
The objective of the project is to encourage street boys to come back to their families and communities, have access to education and jobs as well and to prevent them to become street children again.
