I’ve Been To Africa And Back

by Ginger

I can honestly say that I’ve been there, done that, I took the photo myself; it’s just that the sign was misleading. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could go to Africa and be back already, I somewhat did, but it’s to the zoo this past Saturday. The brochure said, “Walk from Africa to the Arctic…in an afternoon,” sure enough, that’s what we did. The last time I was there was over 10 years ago, when I first moved here, but I do have to say that it didn’t change by much, just some of the plants got bigger. The zoo has over 500 acres of natural animal habitats representing two continents, there were more than 1,100 animals (but many were in hiding because it was a bit hot), and over 60, 000 plants throughout five miles of walking path, surprisingly it was paved, might be to accommodate the handicaps. It was nice to be out, there were definitely more people than animals; I’d say in a ratio of at least 5/1. I took some photos of the plants and animals.

I think Lao people have the tendency to view things differently, one of my cousins that went with us, when she saw these wild ducks, she said that she wants to be a duck because they can walk on land, fly in the sky, swim in the water…after seeing them in action and thinking about what she said, so true, can you think of any other animals that can do all that?

Leave it to my cousin to think of the odd stuff, when she saw the monkey, have you noticed that their behind are reddish pink (I’m not sure which kind or the name of it), she said it’s because they sat on the hot rocks for a long period of time…after looking at them, and hearing her explanation, made me want to scratch my butt a couple of times; I’m not so sure but her explanation made all of us laugh because it’s a very funny explanation.

I wanted to see the elephants, but they were so far away and feel a bit guilty not having any to show, but I found several photos that one of my friends gave me on her recent trip to Africa, I hope you all don’t mind seeing the real thing instead. So this wraps up my trip to the zoo, I think it would be nice if I were actually in Africa…just a wishful thinking.

  1. Wow, what a nice day to spend at the zoo. It makes me want to spend the day at the zoo too. The last time I was at a zoo in Rotterdam was two years ago. I haven’t been to the Kansas City zoo for 5 years I think.

It’s nice to go to the zoo with your family. My siblings think they are too old to go to the zoo with me.

At least no one in your group mentioned anything about having duck for laap ped. When we go to the zoo, the older adults tend to make a comment about taking the duck home for laap ped.

As an animal, I’m already a duck. Ped is my nickname in Lao. I started to speak very early and was talking like an adult my parents said, so they called me ped noy (small duck).

Wish I can swim like a duck though, lol.

Great posting. It looks like an article from a magazine. :)

  2. No, no one mentioned about Laap ped, such a coincidence, my nickname sounds like a duck (not kidding), but the ducks ate all my hot dog buns, so all we had left was the hot dog. There were 12 of us; it was nice to be out among friends and family members. Everything in there was so expensive, but I packed my own snack such as apples, trail mixes, and plenty of water in my backpack.

I think I read too many magazine articles, thanks, what can I say, I learn from the best. ;)
