Feeding time for little duckies

by Darly

I was walking to the local Chinese grocery store and saw these little duckies being fed by their parents. This is a canal along the main road to Rotterdam Central Train Station. At the other end of the road is Hotel Bilderberg. Chef Vienne might recognize this area. :)

Duck feeding in Rotterdam canal

I spent some time watching the duckies being fed by their parents. It was very interesting to see how the parents would dive for the seaweed and then shook the pieces to wash off the dirt before feeding it to their young ones.

If the seaweed was a bit big and too dark in color and after a few rising it doesn’t get quite clean, then the parents would throw the unwanted seaweed away. The meal has to be just right. The parents even divided the task of feeding their little duckies.

I have never seen such a thing before in my life and thought it was quite amusing.

  1. I've never seen they feed their youngins before, that's very interesting.  At first I thought it was a title for your food blog that it's time to feed little duckies, meaning you. ;)

  2. When we were in Laos we had a few ducks and geese and we fed them our leftover food. My parents also kept the ducks' wings short. I never knew they could fly until one day when one of our ducks flew on top of a neighbor's roof.

I was amazed to see such thing but I never quite got the concept that ducks could really fly until we moved to the US and them fly long distance.

That's funny that you thought it was a food blog, feeding time for me.

  3. Yes, I remember the area, and the cold too… (!).We have ducks in our golf course too, but some of them have gone missing (licks lips). ;)
