My Yellow World

Angelina Jolie in a yellow dressI’ve been seeing so much of yellow color on the television lately, especially on Thai TV because of the 60th anniversary celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne, Thai people would honor him by wearing yellow clothing. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it’s their latest and hottest fashion color amongst the Thai population at the moment.

What is the meaning of yellow color?

Hope and Happiness: Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color that, like red, has conflicting symbolism. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit.

Nature of Yellow: Yellow is one of the warm colors. Because of the high visibility of bright yellow, it is often used for hazard signs and some emergency vehicles. Yellow is cheerful.

Culture of Yellow: For years yellow ribbons were worn as a sign of hope as women waited from their men to come marching home from war. Today, they are still used to welcome home loved ones. Its use for hazard signs creates an association between yellow and danger, although not quite as dangerous as red.

For some culture, yellow is for mourning in Egypt and actors of the Middle Ages wore yellow to signify the dead. Yet yellow has also represented courage (Japan), merchants (India), and peace.

According to the Religious world, an interesting write up on Buddhist Monks by Katy Liang, all monks have a special uniform, their robe. The color of a monk’s robe can tell you what his status in the monastery is. If he wears a brownish orange robe he is considered one of the wise, elderly monks. The color of monk’s robe is very important. When the ancient Indians looked into the forest they could always tell what leaves were about to fall off the trees because they were yellow, orange or brown. So yellow became the color of renunciation. Now Buddhist monks wear orange, yellow or brown robes as a constant reminder of the importance of not clinging, and of letting go. I think it’s a very nice write up, as for me personally, the colors of the monk’s robe is very peaceful and easy for the eyes.

As for the Thai, there’s an interesting article in Kwanruen magazine, written in Thai language, which according to Tum Ra, yellow is the color of good luck, unlike Chinese, which is red color. For the Thai people yellow is one of the colors that are associated with luck, wealth, happiness, intelligent, honesty, and bravery. I recall when I was little living in Thailand, on Songkran festival in April or Thai/Lao New Year, we’d decorate our house with Dork Koone that is a yellow flower and the name also signified Komh Koone (loosely translated as luck).

Yellow color in the fashion world is no less important than any other colors, but probably the most important color in the Thai Fashion at the moment, and yellow goes well with other colors, especially with blue, white, and green. Yellow is a very bright and cheerful color, and stands out amongst other colors, as most designers would say that yellow is a very imaginative color, which ever part of your body that’s wearing yellow, whether it’s in blouse, shirt, skirt, pants, purse, shoes, or hat…the warmth and charming color of yellow will make you look very noticeable. Yellow is a very popular color in the fashion industry, whether it’s for the conservative looks, or the hot, sexy looks that you’re going after, yellow can deliver the message.

I once read that if you were born on a Monday, then yellow is also your color. A Monday person is very warm, charming, caring and giving person. I’m wondering whom I’m describing. ;)

  1. Wow, what an interesting post. Now I know why the senior Monks that were our relatives in Laos and Thailand wore the dark yellow robes (brownish yellow).

I remember in Laos how we used dok pheung for new year celebration, along with marigold flower.

When I was in Laos, my cousins asked me if yellow was my favorite color. I only had two yellow skirts that I was wearing but I also wore three tops in light shades of yellow. So, they assumed my favorite color was yellow.

Who do you know that was born on Monday? :)

  2. As for the monks, you can also tell their seniority by where they sit, the one with the most Punsa (year) would be seated at the beginning/head of the line and the least would be at the end. The monks knew each other’s seniority, so they’d know their seating place if invited to someone’s house.

I remember your yellow skirt, I first saw it when you took a picture with Lay’s (I think that’s his name) t-shirt, that’s when I made the first comment on darly.net about your height, but that’s over a year ago, I don’t know if you’d remember. I only have 1 yellow blouse, and yellow does look good with my skin complexion, I should wear it more often.

I’m sure there’s at least one amongst us that’s born on Monday, who do you think? :)

  3. Yep, that is the same skirt I wore in Laos (Vientiane and Pakse), plus another one that I wore to Vang Vieng. It was a brand new skirt when I wore it with Lay's t-shirt and that post is gone for the time being.

Yellow blouse with Lao sinh would look good on you I think. We sort of have the same complexion but I think I am darker than you at times since I like to be in the sun.

I have mentioned in the old LP board about what day I was born when we talked about our favorite days of the week. I bet you know what day I was born if I mentioned it once you will remember it, lol.

  5. There is no point of hiding in the bush. I was born on Monday. I thought you knew about it. The post that I am talking about I said that my favorite day was Monday because it was a start of the week and always a day to look forward to a new begining, like at work for example.
