DSL for $10 a month
Maybe Micheal Moore should do a documentary about the DSL and cell phone companies in America. That would be something to watch. A couple of years ago, DSL would cost as much as $50 a month. While my friends in Canada were getting it for $15 per month. And Comcast broadband had the most expensive packages. But SBC-AT & T came to California and the price for the cheapest plan is about $20. And talk of free Wi-Fi has only been introduced to certain parts of the country.

For some lucky consumers, you may be eligible for broadband internet at only $10 per month. The $10 offer is available to customers in the 22-stateservice region, which includes former BellSouth areas, who have never had AT&T or BellSouth broadband. Local phone service and a one-year contract are required. And the modem is free. AT&T will be offering DSL that does not require purchasing local phone services.
It would seem that AT & T doesn’t really want customers to know about this deal. Because when you get into the AT & T website for DSL plans, it is slightly hidden. A page describing DSL options doesn’t mention it either, so you have to click on the link for “Term contract plans”. The agreement with the FCC required the company to offer the plan for at least 2 1/2 years.
I think this is a good start, as the world wide web should be reasonably accessible to all. Read more about it at SF Gate.

This could be a sign of a good old cartel.
You could deal with that through law but that is far from easy…
In the mid west we have Southwestern Bell for local calls and Sprint or AT&T for long distance. For cable we have Time Warner which also offers internet service at a very high price.
For DSL we went with AOL or AOHell was more like it. It was really expensive and you had to pay for the dial up fee and then added on the DSL.
Thanks goodness that laws changed a couple of years ago and we were able to get SBC service but it was still $39.99 for the connection, plus other charges. They make you sign a one year contract. The trick is that the first 6 months is at a lower rate but then you pay full price later.
The next year's fee was the normal rate. Even though they have deals to attract new customers, older ones are stuck with the higher fees.
What can you do right? Put up with the price or no net surfing.
$10.00 per month sounds very reasonable to me. But adding taxes would probably make it at $19.99 I bet.
