Pong Lang Sa On Concert at Wat Lao Buddhavong of Washington DC July 2007

I think Pong Lang Sa On unique traits are men in skirt, and sexy ladies; their customs really stood out. I like the little white/blue checkers tie; I can’t say that it made him look good, but more so unique in his own way.

As you can see from the video from You tube, there are many people in their band and not all get to come on this concert tour; they called it ‘going inter’. My GI Joe sister said that they had to draw name and the only three that didn’t get to draw were Id, the lead singer, Lulu, and Lala, female singers.

I guess this was the person that did the video even when told not to, clip from Saturday afternoon event, enjoy!

This is one of their music videos from Youtube.

img_1282.JPGThe female dancers were very colorful, Id called them ‘sorn pra pom’, (sacred shrine, where people placed colorful flowers and ribbons for worshiping). I think their music is unique because of the beat, a combination of Issan music and string to Rock ‘n’ Roll; overall, it has that Thai/Lao/Issan traditional musical sound because of the musical instruments such as La Nart, Pin, and Kann.

I like Id’s explanation of Kann that he said it was designed for Issan/Lao/Thai people only because once you placed your mouth on the mouthpiece, your nose would touch the wooden piece, a perfect fit.

As for American, their noses are too long, their nose will hit the wooden piece and wouldn’t be able to blow into the mouthpiece, makes perfect sense to me. The Kann guy with the long hair did several demos for us, even blowing Kann while cartwheeling; sure enough, he has a flat nose just like a typical Asian person.

img_1276.JPGimg_1314.JPGThe lead singer, Id likes to post in an odd way while taking pictures, he called it the sexy look but I’m not so sure, he gives me chills and goose bumps just by looking at him, not that I think he looks sexy, but more like kind of strange, sort of in a funny way.

His drummer on the other hand is beautiful, not very often that you’d find a female drummer.

img_1301.JPGThere’s one part of the concert that I thought was very funny, Id asked the La Nart guy to bring out 3 chairs, one for himself and the other 2 for the female singers, Lulu and Lala.

The La Nart guy only brought out 2 because that was all he could find and he brought out one long bamboo stick and placed that on a chair, which looks like a see saw. Lala sat on one chair, and then Id and Lulu sat at each end of the bamboo stick.

One person in the audience said that they’d see Id’s thingy sticking out (hom), he was embarrassed and got up, and you can probably guess of what happened to Lulu. Then they sat back down again, but this time the bamboo stick broke in half, which I doubt was part of the show and they had to find another stick to replace it.

img_1174.JPGThere was an American singer, John who sang Mor Lum and can speak Thai/Lao fluently; very impressive because some Laotian that grew up in the US can’t even speak as fluently as he can.

I also met two brothers on Friday evening that claimed that they’re singers from Laos; I thought they’re just bluffing, but sure enough, they can really sing. They have great voice but it’s not my type of music so I didn’t purchase their CD, but I did tip them.

img_1328.JPGI ran into someone that looks very familiar, I’m not sure of his real name but we called him Ai Gei Dang, most might have seen him from Lao Champa TV.

My oldest sister is a friend of one of his nieces, and my dad knew him from Laos, apparently we used to live in the same town, but I can’t remember him and I seriously doubt if he’d remember me because I was only about 4-5 years old, I’ve grown since then.

img_1178.JPGI thought my photos were awful and needed a new camera, my GI Joe sister photos didn’t look any better, it didn’t do them justice at all.

My sister is very pretty and has great personality; this is a cool picture of her taken by my camera. Below are photos of her and Pong Lang Sa On taken at the temple on Friday.

  2. I'm happy you and your family had a chance to be out there. Too bad you didn't get to camp on the Wat's ground. That would have been some blog on your site.

That's what 4th of July celebration is about, food and fun with family and friends.

At first glance I thought your GI Joe sister is Euey Ketsana Vilaylack (the Lao singer). She even wore the army pants. :)

  3. She’s the one that I spoke about all the time, and I asked her yesterday if she mind her photos being on the Internet and she’s okay with it. I’ve noticed the pants also, she’s 5 years older than me, but she’s the one that they mistaken her for me all the time, one time we stood next to each other and someone asked if we’re twin, might be the hair cut. :P

  4. Now that you mentioned it, people will know what you look like now. Let's just say it's the hair cut. :P

She looks so delicate as in not like the type of person you would see doing what she does. You guys have good genes, nice and thin. :)

We have a round frame in my mother's side of the family. My papa's family on the other hand has the same skinny look.

  5. I seriously doubt if people care what I look like, if they do…then there's something wrong there, hehehe.

  6. I don't know what to tell you about this. Visitors and members of LP, along with visitors to Nyenoona.com only know you by the red flower. People are curious creatures you know. :P

  7. haha i took that video… i didn't mean to.. i hit the wrong button..

    laugh out loud

    =P

  8. We provided security for this event and we really enjoyed it so much. This group was very funny even though i could not understand them. They really were great. I hope they will come back again some day also we hope that they will invite us back to provide security for them again too. Security provider

  9. i was at the wat lao w/ my mom when pong lang perform, they were so funnyand people keep giving them money and they all had a bag full of money, so funny

  10. Hi Kay, fast little finger you got there, thanks for posting, I’m hoping that it won’t get plugged anytime soon.  I was hastened to take the photos at first but saw that the singers came down to take photos with the audience then I got a bit braver because they clearly instructed us not to take photos and videos, and even had the Wat’s attorney to announce.

  11. Hi Stan, great security work, everything went so smoothly.  I think they try to bring new band each year, this was my second time being there for the concert, but it looks like I’ll be going there every year from now on, we love it so much. :)

  12. Hi Saleela, my friend told me to bring lots of small bills because they’d come down to visit with the audience, I gave tips to the 2 Lao brothers, and the Pong Lang lady drummer.  We stopped by the Wat on Sunday and donated some money, when I left; I had $1 in my pocket, now I’m broke…lol, but it’s worth it, lots of fun, I might see you there next year. :)

  13. I’m an american living in Thailand now ,but used to go to Wat Lao in D.C. for the 4th of July fairs. Even though I’ve seen Pong Lang Sa On here I’m jealous of you all! They put on a great show.

  14. Hi Ed, they did put on great shows; I regret that I didn’t get to stay for their Sunday shows.  Most of us living in the USA didn’t get to see the concert, and that’s what so great about the Internet is to be able to share.  The band video the Saturday shows and I believe that it’ll be on a ‘Tee Sip’ show in Thailand.  I’ve always wanted to go see ‘7 see concert’ in Thailand, and the foods, now you made me jealous of you living there.  It’s good to hear from you. :)

  18. OMG! I just love this group. I’ve been trying to see if they have any concerts scheduled for the United States, but can’t find anything. If anyone out there finds out if they have one soon or whenever for the U.S. please post it here. Thanks!
