Making Khao Thom for a Lao Boun

by Darly

Today is Boun Khao Phansa in Laos. My Grand-Mama and my aunts are taking part in the celebration. They were busy making Khao Thom for the Morning Alms Giving yesterday. It is very common for people to make Khao Thom for a boun. All family members would gather and help out in this fun chore. When I was a kid in Laos I was the one picking the banana leaves from our yard and got everything ready for my mother. She would cook the rice and then we would gather around her to help her fold the khao thom.

When I was in Laos for my Grand-Papa’s Boun Loy Vanh we also made khao thom for the next day’s Alms Giving. Here are the photos from that khao thom session. All the neighbors were there to help with the cooking. There were jokes and stories to share. You can hear the laughers from the distance. It is such a priceless experience and a way of life that you can’t measure with money.

  1. I’ve never seen Khao Thom made out of Khao Kom before, interesting.  You can freeze these and microwave them later and they actually tasted pretty good, I’ve seen in Asian market that they import them from Thailand.

  2. Hi Nye,

It is better with the purple rice, more sweet and more flavor. You still have to mix the purple rice with white rice for tenderness.

  3. [...] posted earlier about my relatives in Laos making khao thom for Boun Khao Phansa. Here is a video I previously posted at the old LP media section about Boun Khao [...]
