Beauty Is In The Eyes Of The Beholder

by Ginger

‘Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ this we can’t deny there is some truth to it. I think we’ve tried to pin point what is considered beautiful, what about Miss Universe, even this, we all have different opinion and can’t agree on who we think is the most beautiful. Why is that so? might be because it’s not a physical concrete as we all see, but more of a feeling that we have and beauty trends varies in different part of the world, thin might be considered sexy in certain part of the world but starvation, pathetically skinny in others.

According to the article, the tradition of encasing a female’s neck in metal reportedly began years ago to stop rivals from kidnapping them. By making Padaung tribe females too freakish to be desired by others, the coils also allowed them to be identified easily if they were captured.

The ‘giraffe-neck women’ have been put on display for tourist to gawk at, alongside kitschy long-neck souvenirs including dolls, key chains, T-shirts, pen sets, portraits and post cards. They are somewhat exotic to look at and I’m sure they’re considered beautiful for some.

As I was growing up, I’ve noticed that most of my Chinese friends have very small feet; I was told that long feet are ugly. I thought it was rather strange; I’ve normal size feet for my height. It’d be odd for me to have small feet, I wouldn’t be able to balance myself, might just tilt over or something.

I was baffled, I think she just called me ugly, but she went on and explained that back in ancient China, for a woman to be considered beautiful, she must have a very small feet. How small? The size of the cigarette carton. What? True, and she said that the parents would wrap or bound their baby’s feet to prevent normal growth, ouch…sounds painful.

Hmm, the size of cigarette carton, no wonder she thought I was ugly, I’m a size 8 and when I purchased shoes in Chinatown, NY several years back, they looked at me as if I was a freak or something, might have never seen such giant feet before. But just the thought of it, I can’t imagine how these women would be able to balance themselves, and I certainly don’t see the beauty in that at all and might be because I’m not from that era, and region.

This Chinese tradition of feet bounding had been passed down for over several decades, but has changed when the communist took over, and might be because everyone has to work equally, small feet just wouldn’t cut it, which I’m glad because I think it’s torturing to have this kind of beauty. I just don’t see the beauty in deformity of the feet, but the ideas are still there for many Chinese people, small feet are still considered beautiful. I wonder if Chinese guy would look at the feet before face, I need to pay closer attention the next time I see my Chinese male friends.

I often wonder who sets up the trend of beauty; it seems to change pretty often. Is it the males, the designers, or the individual female setting her own beauty trends?

  1. Most people would say that a universal indication of beauty is symmetry. However, evidence is piling up that symmetry isn't a real good indicator of beauty.

  2. Sounds good to me, so I’m ugly to some because I have long feet for their standard, but pretty because I have a symmetrical face, according to my orthodontist, I’m not sure if he were just saying this because he wanted my business, he said that I have good gene, my parents gave me a symmetrical face.  But I still think that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, mostly radiant from inside out.

  3. I watched a documentary about foot binding in China a couple of years ago and was so sad for those old ladies that couldn't walk properly. They are living in so much pains. What a price to pay for beauty.

I have wide feet at 7 1/2 and sometimes it's hard to find shoes in wide width. In high school I was wearing the same size as my mother and we often got confuse with our shoes since we bought similar shoes. Good thing my feet got bigger to be 7 1/2 now.

I also got confuse with my youngest's sisters shoes at times. She often bought the same pairs of shoes. But last year her feet grew bigger and I accidentally wore her tennin shoes on the plane back to NL. I was sitting at the airport and wondering why my shoes were so loose. Then I took them off and realized I took my sister's shoes. They were line up side by side by the stairs. By then my parents were on their way home and I didn't want to call them to bring back my shoes.

When I went to Laos, I took the shoes with me and gave them to my mother to take back to my sister. Cheaper than way since I was going to see my parents anyway.

I think we have giant feet for Asians. I also have big head and a big shoulder. It must be in the genes because we have the biggest heads in school in comparison to all those white guys. Even my youngest sister said they made fun of her at school because her head is one of the top 5 big heads in her class. She was the only girl to have such a big head, lol. Let's hope there is more brain than air in there.

  4. ROFL, Hehehe…that was so funny Darly, it’s a strange beauty that you’re describing of yourself.  ;)   I think I have a normal size head for my body, but then again, I might be considered a giant in height to some Asian female, but an average size for an American standard, very easy to find cloths.  My feet are narrow so I don’t have any problem in finding shoes.

  5. Well, I'm glad that I made your day. :P Seriously, I am a freak of nature but that is how it is when nature got a piece of my mama and my papa and then here I am. Johan makes fun of me all the time and calls me XXL Asian. The thing was that we were at a Chinese store and they were selling Chinese outfits. I wear size 34 but those clothes in Asian size is XXL.

  6. That’s soooo funny, XXL Asian, I’ve never heard of that before.  I wear a size 4 and 6 in the US, what is a size 34?

  7. The tag said it's size 2 in the US but I don't think so. I wear size 4 in the US but lately I have noticed that size 2 is pretty big in the US. I think the last couple of years the size in the US went smaller but the clothes are bigger. I know I'm getting wider so the size should be bigger not smaller, lol.

I thought it was funny to buy clothes in size 2 last summer when I went home. I was lost at the mall trying to figure out what my normal size is. Lying to us about our size is not going to make us feel better. But I guess some women might feel good about smaller size with the same amount of fabric.

  8. If you’re a size 2 and 4, and considered XXL Asian, what am I? Lol.  I don't think I want to know. :)
