I don't live with my parents anymore either but I can cook for myself. When I was doing my undergrad study I only ate American food and Lao food only when I went home for the weekend. But after being here one year and not having any tum maak houng, I couldn't take it anymore. When I went home I bought a set of kok and sark with me so I can make tum maak houng.
This is funny but I also bring shrimp paste from the US to last me a whole year. You should try making tum maak houng for yourself. It's so easy and after a few batches you will have your own taste and style.
