Bodhi Leaves

by salat

Recently Ginger wrote about her visit to the Lao temple in Washington, D.C. and how she got to see a Bo (Pohl) tree. I was inspired to share a picture too. This picture is from a Bo tree at a Lao temple in northern California. I like how the new leaves start out. It was suppose to have come from India, and was once part of the original Bo tree at Buddha’s enlightenment in India.

The tree goes by many names, such as the sacred fig or the pipal tree. Parts of the tree is also used in herbal medicines.

  1. Hi Salat, the weather must not be very cold during the winter time for the Bodhi Tree to survive the winter months, very nice, and thanks for sharing. :)

  2. I heard the tree almost didn't survive last winter's freeze.  There are alot of dead branches around the top.  There were also some statues of Buddhas placed around the trunk and root area too.  But I just took pictures of the new sprouting leaves.
