Hot Weather Makes Me Think Of Laos

We’re having a heat wave in our area the last couple of days; it’s in the southeastern part of the United States. Many of my friends are complaining that it’s too hot, one day last week, it was 100F, and today might reach 95F.

I’m a bit odd that I like hot weather, it makes me think of Laos when it gets really hot, must be something inside of me that’s triggering this and I’ve noticed that it’s not just me. My dad also likes the hot weather, he fixed his garage into a little den, and that’s where I’d hang out when I visit him, with the garage door open. I think it might look odd to his neighbors, especially when it’s 95-100F degrees outside, and we’re sitting in the garage, on a hot and humid day without air conditioning, they must have thought that we’re crazy, but that’s what we like to do, and the best part is to sit and talk about the good old days in Laos.

My dad, like most Lao dads, likes to talk about politics, which is not my cup of tea but I’d listen anyway; many times I’d find my mind wandering off to a far away land, Laos, and if he were to talk about certain regions, then I’d think about what I could remember and start to ask him questions just to confirm my memory, and most of the time, our conversations always steer away from the issue of politics and politicians.

It really surprise me that the older Laotian men, when they’ve a get together, that’s all they’d talk about, politics and politicians. It’s amusing to watch at times because they’d talk very loud, as if to get their point across, but most of the times they’d talk about the dead issues, I often wonder, what’s the point, and if it’s going anywhere.

But really, I don’t think it matters as to what the topic of discussion, what matters more is that they’ve friends to talk to, by the end of their meeting, you’d literally see the joy and happiness on their faces. I think this is what it’s all about, a social network because many times, their children are too busy with their own lives, they’d neglect their elderly parents, that they are too busy to do anything with them, even to visit, it’s a bit sad in my opinion.

I’m just ranting here; it’s going to be nice, hot, and sunny in my area. Do you like hot weather? Some people might say “It’s too hot, I’m melting here!”, but I say, “it’s like living in Laos.” ;)

  1. Hot weather use to bother me, but now I just eat lots of watermelons and drink iced tea.  And learn to appreciate summer for the time that it's around.

I also have friends that don't care to spend time with their parents until it's too late.  I've been bless to have had such a kind father in my life.   Sounds like you have a great dad too.

Does your father listen to Chinese music?  Mine loves them.  I still have a collection of his, it's very light and airy music.   It's bring me back to my childhood whenever I hear it.

  3. Hi Salat, my dad is very kind; he enjoys spending time with us, might be because when we’re younger he moved a lot because of his profession, and hardly had time to stay with his family.  He likes to listen to female musicians, soft soothing voice which is also not my cup of tea, but I’d buy them for him if I see new ones coming out, or if I order them on line.  I like to spend more time with my family than friends, might be because they’re more sincere.  From what I recall reading about your dad, yours’ and mine have had a lot in common.

  4. Hot weather is neat because plant life seems to be in abundant. And this kind of abundance makes me think of Laos.

  5. Hi Sim, I’m glad that you feel differently about hot weather, from what I recall, you hated it last year, and you are right that fruits and vegetables are plentiful in the summer, and that is one of the reasons that I like about summer also. :)

  6. There were a few heatwaves that I could live without. The worse one had killed about 160 people in California. Other than that summer is a blessing. :)

If global warming is the cause of the problem then we should think twice before we drive cars that won’t get more than 40 MPG-Highway.
