Som Tam’s new friend

During my visit in Laos I saw a new way of eating green papaya salad that I never thought could be possible. Normally when som tam or green papaya salad is served, there would be various vegetables on a side and a long time friend of kiep moo (pork rinds) or khao phoon (rice vermicelli).

A new trend in Laos is to serve sticky rice noodles and sweet fried banana chips with green papaya salad. There goes the thought that sticky rice noodles should only be shown in a bowl of fer (pho) or in pad Thai or in nam khati. It’s a bit different than rice vermicelli but I can get use to it. The sweet banana chips help to calm down the burning sensation a bit. I guess it’s good to have a new friend on the table.

  1. WOW!, I have never heard about that before, and will definately look out for it when I return to VTE next month.

Are those Som Moo parcels I see at the top of the first pic?

    Yummy…
    ;)

  2. Hi Vienne,

The tum maak houng above is from the street vendor. Not a bad trend to start I think. That’s a plate of fried banana chips you see in the first top pic.
