Harvesting Time

This is a bad year for many farmers in Laos. Due to torrential rain in Laos in late September and early October, thousands of hectares of rice fields in Champassack Province were flooded. My cousin Mo told me how the farmers in Pakse were harvesting the rice, trying to save what they can from the flood. The day he took the photos above, Mo told me he was watching the farmers using canoes to get to the rice because the water is too deep to walk around.

It is going to be a harsh year for many communities in the rural area. If they are lucky, they might have enough rice to eat until the next planting season. Some of my relatives won’t have enough rice to eat because they only harvested 1/3 of their planted rice. They would need outside help, whether from the government, NGOs or relatives from abroad.

  1. We had a house in Viengchan that over look a rice field. Watching the rice field blowing in the wind is memorizing. I love fishing for paduke, tiny snail, and mang da. When the rice field is dry and rice already harvested, we go look for field mouse. Looking at these photographs makes we want to jump in the picture.

  2. It is sad that too much rain nor too little is never good for farmers as I recalled my dad struggled to keep the rice paddy field survived the odd of mother nature.  This scenery is very familiar to me; I do miss seeing it.
