Fashion Spotlight

by salat

If anyone has visited Nye Noona’s blog lately, they will definitely notice her beautiful coverage of Elle Fashion Week Thailand. I won’t be surprise to see some of the designers cross over to the US soon. And one of the most popular fashion designer of Thai descent (here in the US) is Thakoon Panichgul. His designs are described as “perfectly modernized minimalism in an earthy palette and a precise, elegant silhouette.” He has a strong following, counting celebrities to be among many of his fans. But watch out Thakoon, another new designer is about to join the league.

And he is a designer of Lao descent, Mr. Nary Manivong, who is on my fashion spotlight. His latest collection (Spring 2008) was showcased last September at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC . The ones pictured below are from his collection, they are some of my favorites. I really like how he can make a simple dress look very elegant.

You can learn more about him at www.narymanivong.com. It’s great that he managed to stay in the harsh world of fashion all through his tenacity and hard work. Not to mention has was self-taught too! I wanted to congratulate him for making it this far and wish him much success in the future.

  1. Thanks for the mention Salat. I thought Nary Manivong design looks really nice; I saw a nice write up of him at VOANews and thought about posting the article at LaoVoices also.  The other day I was at Office Max and saw Chloe Dao CD holders, sleeve for iPod and many more by Pacific Design and each has her picture on the tag, I thought that was nice, Laotian designers are making a name for themselves.

  2. I remember Chloe Dao from Project Runway.  She is really paving the road for many inspiring young Asian designers.

But in my opinion,  I really like Nary’s style much more than Chloe’s.  I hope his collection get carry at more places soon.   But of course I’m not really into "designer" brand names.  I just try to find my own look.  But I do get some really neat inspirations from their designs.  :)
