Vientiane Boat Racing Festival 2007

The Vientiane boat racing festival (Boun Suang Huer) took place on October 23rd to the 27th with the official competition on the last day. It was a lively event with thousands of spectators that came out to cheer on their favorite team.

Many vendors had set up stalls along the route of the boat races selling Lao food like BBQ chicken, housewares, clothings, and pretty much just about anything. The prices for these items were roughly the same as you would find at the Morning Market so many of the residents from surrounding villages took this opportunity to shop until they drop.

For those people that were not able to come out, they were able to watch the boat racing festival in both Vientiane and Champassak province on Lao National Television.

  1. [...] was very happy to see what I’ve asked for: a Laotian Fondue, toasted sticky rice and a CD of photos from the Boat Racing Festival in Vientiane. I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get my Sao Lao magazine as requested. My aunt [...]

  2. Nice photos Darly, did cousin Mo took these or your aunt?  I didn’t know that Lao people Peng Kai (eggs), must be the ones with the still born inside. http://gallery.laovoices.com/v/vientianeboat2007/DSCF0058.jpg.html?g2_enterAlbum=0

  3. Hi Ginger,

Glad you like the photos. My uncle in Vientiane took the photos for me. Mo was busy in Pakse taking photos of the boat racing festival there. It was bigger and better in Pakse with more boats and a parade.

But the boat racing festival in Vientiane holds a special place in my heart. I used to be at this very spot as a little kid almost every year. It’s at Vat Chanh and at night time I can still remember the Loy Huer Fai and the smells and sounds of the event.

I think it’s a new thing in Laos with the BBQ of baby duck or baby chicken eggs. I saw the vendors selling them at a bus stop on the way to Pakse. I didn’t get a chance to try one though.

  4. Looks like a fun place to be in. It’s nice to see the current photos with the help of Darly’s uncle. It helps those that are curious but can’t be there.

  5. Wow, this is only something I hear my father talk about.  His youth was spent on these long boats.   He would have loved to be a part of this event anytime.

Ginger, the eggs remind me of these eggs the Lao ladies sell at the local Asian market.  They don’t have the stick, but they look the same.  They’re not baby chick eggs either.  Instead, it has spices mixed it and then shaken together and steamed.   They are good eaten with sweet & sour sauce.
