Luang Prabang
A documentary about Luang Prabang. The construction of Na Khone Luang Prabang. A must see video for those that are interested in the history and culture of Laos. Too bad there is no subtitle in English for those of you that can’t understand Lao.

This is probably a proper way of speaking but I don’t understand her at all. They should have a Tai Muang Luang person narrating to make it more authentic.
Darly, does your relatives speak that way when you visited them?
Ok…I t hought it was Muang Suar (tiger), not Muan Swuar (Bad). The reason I thought it was Munag Suar because there is Muang Singh just north of it by border to China. Anyone know what Muang Swuar mean?
Hi Dallas,
You know what I sound like so my relatives speak pretty much the same as me with a touch of Tai Banh Keun of course on my mother’s side.
On my father’s side they all speak with a southern accent.
Believe it or not I can imitate Lao accents somewhat but I need more practice to get the right sound. I didn’t understand Tai Muang Luang accent at first when talking to my aunt-in-law over the phone but after awhile I understood what she said.
I don’t like my voice though, it sounds too whiny to me.
My siblings are funny though because they have a mixed accent and they say tum baak houng like Nye Ginger. I’m the only one in the house next to my mother that say maak houng with emphasis on maak, LOL.
Darly,
What I wanted to say was that the narrator speak using some vocabulary that I am not familiar with. It is something I consider a normal or regular way talking of the native Laos. But for people like me, we speak using basic vocabulary. If people back home in Laos all speak like the narrator, I would have a hard time talking to have a conversation with them.
Hi Dallas,
It depends on who you talk to and some of my relatives are very proper and use big words, usually the older ones. I didn’t have any problem understanding Lao in Lao so I don’t think you will have any problem at all. I noticed the mixing of Thai words in sentences though, especially with the younger people.
There is no meaning for Muang Swuar I think unless you can figure out the meaning of the name "Swuar." According to the narrator, that is the name of the first ruler so the name of the town was taken from that family name.
