To honor the Lao Traditional Food Festival 2008 that is taking place at the Lao National Culture Hall in Vientiane today and tomorrow, I have selected a few photos to showcase Lao dishes that would be presented at the festival.

This is the second Lao Traditional Food Festival and it is expected to be bigger and better than last year. There will be about 100 booths to showcase various dishes from all over the country with cooking demonstrations from cooks and chefs from the established restaurants and those that want a chance to show off their talents. Additional booths will also be set up to showcase Lao arts and crafts.

Lao bamboo soup

Lao beef jerky and fried chicken

Lao soup phak

Lao BBQ, beef jerky and sausage

grilled frogs

grilled fish

Even though we are here doing our things and not able to attend the festival I have asked my aunt in Vientiane to go take pictures for us. Check back in a couple of weeks for mouth watering photos from the Lao Traditional Food Festival 2008.

  2. Sabaidee Etoi,

The first picture is of Lao bamboo shoot soup or Kang Nor Mai.

The second picture, from the left is Lao beef jerky or Sien Heng. Next to it on the right is Lao fried chicken or Jeun Kai.

The third picture is Soup Phak. I don’t know the name in English. It is made from steamed vegetables with herbs and spices, sort of like salad but cooked vegetables.

The fourth picture has Lao BBQ chicken (Ping Kai) and pork (Ping Sien Moo) and Lao sausage (Sai Aure).

The fifth picture is Lao BBQ frogs or Ping Kop.

The last picture is Lao BBQ fish or Ping Pa.

  3. The third picture, I often eat it in Indonesia. This is a special food from Lombok (an island). I like it so much!
