Books Box Library and The Language Project

I never thought that our books boxes can turn into a library, and according to Darly’s post, the books box library at Akat Elementary School in Vientiane is being used by the students during their break time. The students are also allowed to check out their favorite books and take them home to read and bring them back in a few days. I like the idea of Books Box Library.

Yesterday, I came across a thread posted by Milwaukeelady, a young Hmong living in the US that linked to my post Please help Give Lao Children A Chance, and I’m touched that there are young Hmong and Laotians living in the US that want to give back to our homeland, I believe that when you have the desire to help, you’ll find a way to make it happen.

This video below gives us some ideas of how important reading is in everyday life, especially to the children in Laos. The Language Project creates new or supports existing libraries in Laos to help those who are helping themselves. The libraries range in size from a box of books in a village house to a large self-study resource center in the education center of the north, Luang Prabang.

  1. Are the people speaking in Hmong? I can’t understand them.

  2. Dallas, if you’re talking about the thread, I believed it’s the Hmong language, but I read Filipino blogs, so I don’t notice stuff like that as much, sort of skip over.

About the topic of discussion of helping children (people) in Laos, sometimes it’s hard when you’re talking to people and only get negative feedback, but deep down inside you know that you can make a difference and in this case it doesn’t take a lot of money but it does take dedication to make things work. Most older Laotians still have anger issue with the communist government and can’t separate them from the innocent people and children, I often hear this in my sisters’ voice; to me it’s unfair and not their fault that they got left behind, and I’d easily picture myself in their shoes.

We would also hear stories of people that pocket the money, I’m willing to take that risk, and it might be a small price that we’ve to pay until we find the right connection, and after finding out who the leechers are, we know not to deal with them again, but there are many good people out there. We need more people like Milwaukee lady, I think she has what it takes to make a difference and I admire her for wanting to help her people, any of us that is, it’s a matter of wanting to or not, and if you want something bad enough, you’ll find away, and one person can make a difference.
