Durian anyone?

There is still something familiar with this picture. While Vientiane might be moving at a faster pace, this durian seller still relies on the old fashion wagon. This is something that most merchants would be using in the 80’s to transport their fruits and vegetables. The main difference is that it was a dusty dirt road. This area is only a few meters from That Luang Market. I used to walk on this road to my Grand-Papa’s house. It was typical for most people to walk or used bicycles to get around. There were some motorbikes and cars travelling on this road was a rare sight. Vientiane today is not the same as Vientiane in 1988. Well, atleast we will always have durian.

  1. I’m wondering if they’re still selling the hybrid ones that smell good, I’m not a big fan of Durian, you know what they say about them, “a scent to wake the dead.” Here is the Durian hybrid article, Fans Sour on Sweeter Version of Asia’s Smelliest Fruit - New York …

  2. Yes that looks tasty.  I love all tropical fruits, even the odd smelling one.  Hey Ginger, I remember that article, I think I wrote about durians and used that same article as my reference :)

  3. Yes Salat, you did wrote a post at the old LP forum and used this article, and back then I mentioned that they would be able to tell if it’s ready for harvest when the first Durian drop by itself, so it’s very dangerous to be in the Durian farm, people actually get killed by the drop of the Durian on their head, I think hard hat should be required. :)

  4. I was talking to Aunt Phone earlier today about durian. I told her I have never eaten it before in my life. My mother never bought one as far as I can recall and I have only eaten maak mee (Jack fruit) since our neighbor grew a few trees of them. Aunt Phone told me the durian are from Pakse and Lao people have been getting quite good a growing durian and can supply the entire country. The quality and taste is the same as the ones from Thailand.

As far as the hybrid type, for durian lovers, there is no substitute for the smell. Aunt Phone said they have interviewed people in Thailand and most of the durian lovers said, the smell is the characteristic of durian, if it doesn’t smell like one, then it’s not real durian and they won’t accept anything else.
