VOA news becoming a rightwing mouthpiece

I think I have seen quite a few Republicans under the Lao American population but I never expected McCain selected Sarah Palin to be his running mate. He accepted her just the way she is. I also strongly believe that all mothers would do a great job once come to responsibilities and taking care of the domestic issues. We have patience and a will to take care the family in any circumstances

This is where she left any sense of professionalism and clearly took the path to operate as a mouthpiece for the Republican party. Why? Because, like many other Lao people, she thinks voting for the Reps is a vote fore big money, success and family values. She could not be any more wrong.

A vote for the Republicans right now is a vote for the Christianist who seek to politicize Christianity the way Islamists politicize Islam. Remember, Sarah Palin is a woman who once addressed a church congregation, saying of her work as governor - transport, policing and education - “really all of that stuff doesn’t do any good if the people of Alaska’s heart isn’t right with God“.

A neo-theocracy is just a heartbeat away from the presidency and “journalists” such as Keodara just keep missing this point or, worse, actually see this as a viable future. Family values? Here are just 34 of the Republican scandals that have little or nothing to do with any family value.

So is the republican party the path to the big money and success for Lao people? Far from that. After more than eight years of harmful military spending, unbalanced budgets, fiscal irresponsibility, protectionism and monopoly handouts to friends, the Republicans have brought the US almost to its knees and in sky high debts.

There is a particular lack of control of big government and government spending with Republican presidents. In fact, they spend more public money than any democratic president has ever done. Bye bye tax money.

Keodora keeps on pushing that Rep agenda by presenting John Noravong,  who supposedly is an exec Vice-President of the Timberland bank. Yes, keodara, we got your message. To be a successful vice president we must vote for Republicans. That was Disney Land by Keodora, now the wake up call.

CNN published a clear table which shows that when you make less than $112,000 a year, then you will pay less in taxes under Obama’s policies compared to McCain’s. According to the IRS, 89% of Americans report less than $100,000 in adjusted gross income (2005).

How about Lao Americans? The situation for Lao Americans is far worse. According to the 2000 census, Lao Americans obtained a per capita (per person 25+ ) income of less than $12,000! Ironically, this is almost one tenth of the threshold where they benefit more from Republicans. Most will never make the Rep honey pot in their lifetime.  More than one third of the Lao Americans even live below the poverty line.

An estimated 98.5% of all Lao americans will pay more taxes under McCain than under Obama.

Go figure.

Unfortunately, VOA news is becoming a nasty Republican mouthpiece and publishes stories that lack any solid factual ground. Propaganda such as this from Keodora should be looked upon with a healthy dose of caution. How much money did you get for this commercial, Vannasone?

  1. Good article and to the point about the tax issue, but one minor correction, the statement that you mentioned “Vannsone wrote “McCain selected Sarah Palin to be his running mate. He accepted her just the way she is…” was actually said by Sue or Khaopaseuth Akhasone of Virginia, and not Vannasone, true that she wrote the article but might not have shared the same point of view (or she might.)

  2. Ginger, I wrote that down intentionally in the same way Vannasone selected these people intentionally and also intentionally selected their quotes. It is her selection of words to promote the Republican party and, by that, making VOA news a Republican advertisement agency for McCain.

That is bad news for VOA and I just hope Lao Americans can look through this fabricated success stories and see the true intentions. Lao Americans have nothing to win from McCain/Palin so don’t vote simply on instincts you might have before. At least make a conscientious decision.

I added a line to emphasize she quoted someone but the story is how she constructed it.

  3. I knew it was intention on your part, and also intention on hers, but I guess I just want to be political correct about this, thanks for adding the extra line.

I think the most fearful thing that most Americans feel is that if the Democrats win, then the whole nation would turn to Islam, sort of contradicting and ironic that we pride ourselves of being the nation of freedom of religion. Also, another fearful thing that some Americans that I talked to have is that they feel the Democrats will tax us to death then give our hard earned tax dollars to welfare recipients and aids program, which if that’s the case, then I think I’d be more than happy for my tax dollars to feed, rather than to kill the people, I like peace and not war.

I think it’s hard for people to decide at the moment, especially if you’re a female and most when they see a female candidate up there, then they have the need to support, but we’ve to look at the overall picture and our current state that we’re in. For some of us that might not know who to vote for, then I would suggest to vote straight party and vote for change.

And there is no cure for stupidity. Is that a harsh word in this context? I don’t think so. This Islam debate is mimicking the TV spots of McCain that are implying Obama will bring Islam. It’s plain stupidity (can’t see a more appropriate word) and maybe America deserves the path it takes.

I always laugh my ass off when I see Republican fanboys (working and middle class) whose fate it is to pay more taxes. They are so afraid to build up a decent (small) welfare system that they would rather invest in Christianists who believe the world is 10,000 years old. Pathetic in my eyes but I also realize when hillbillies take over there is no stopping them. They have this certain attraction of simple solutions to an increasing audience that can’t handle any level of reasonable complexity anymore.

  6. You kids don’t know but we left laos in the 70’s because of the Democrat party of Laos, communist party. We are for people keeping what they earned and do what ever they want with it. We are not for the government forcing us or telling us what to do with our money and property. This is called Freedom. Private individuals and private entities do better job in getting the bangs for the bucks. Private individuals donate more money and resources in this county called USA. Obama is for power and his policy is of Lenin and Marx. We left that in Laos. What change is he wanting? Peace? Cuba has peace. Peace come in high price, Freedom. Laos was at peace since 1975 and the people was not allowed to leave; we love freedom and risk our life to get away to our new home called the USA. A lot of producers in Laos left and don’t want none of that here in our new home, USA. Is Laos 1st world yet? America is young compare to Europe. What happened, why is it so successful? People don’t starve here, even poor people have flat screen tvs, celllphones, cable, access to internet for free, etc. Poor people are fat in this country. We so prosperous that even illegals can work here. We have no unemployment, else we would have no illegals. Why has the US been so successful? We don’t even need oil from outside sources, if it weren’t for the Green-communist party. Check out the oil shale in the rockies, more than in Saudis. Are you ready to live your live without plastics? Hello! Oil Product! If you like Lenin and Marx idealism than look around. Cuba? Korea? Even them are slowing moving toward the Market Economy. People will stop working if they don’t get to keep or do what they want with their earnings. This happened to Vietnam, Laos during the 70’s and 80’s. Money don’t buy you happiness but it sure makes happiness come to you easier. For some reason, college students and recent graduates seems to know more than anyone else. Why are you called students? You can take all you want from us but we know how to make more but you not take our freedom. “Give me liberty or Give me Death!”

  7. Actually the United States IS a democracy, one of the oldest surviving ones in the world. To confuse our system with Communism suggests a severe lack of the most basic education. I’m not talking about University, just reading a simple civic textbook. If anything the current penchant to embrace those without the requisite knowledge to run a country reminds me of the “kone pa” who came down out of the hills to run Laos in the mid 70s. Couldn’t read and write but sure had ideology down pat.

One of the bedrocks of our democracy is an educated informed electorate. If you can’t tell the difference between the two parties running today, please, don’t vote.

Eight years ago when George Bush took office the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 10,600 yesterday it closed at 10,900. It’s been a great eight years. We have killed well over 100,000 people in a war of choice against people who did nothing to us other than coming from the same corner of the world as some people who did do us harm. Millions more are without health insurance, our health care system now ranks lowest among the rich industrialized countries by all standards. We have abandoned people to drown in their houses while the whole world looked on during Hurricane Katrina, half of them the elderly over 75 years old. A record number of homes are in foreclosure, every day a new corrupt unregulated bank folds. Poverty has increased even as productivity has increased. We now make more and are paid less, even college graduates. You want eight more years of that? Perhaps you deserve it.

The economic comparisons to China, Laos, and Vietnam are almost laughable. Marx was replaced by Adam Smith there a long time ago. Those countries are some of the most freewheeling capitalist societies on earth. Everything is or is becoming private. Only if you pay can you get services. Doctors, police, education? Only if you have the money to pay. Corruption and graft rule, it’s called a kleptocracy, similar to the system we are moving towards here. The people with the power steal the money and feed disinformation to the electorate.

Please. Turn off your TV. Read. Part of your duty as a citizen is to be informed, please do so.

That is insane. There is nothing in Obama’s policies remotely from Marx or Lenin. Isaara’s post is one of the silliest I have ever seen. Don’t call us kids, Isaara, when the content of your own post is without a doubt infantile. I have more respect for Republicans than to call you one (can you imagine).

    * Ok, deep breath and refrain from qualifying remarks here *

Ehm… the Clinton era ended in 2000. The Dow is supposed to grow 5-9% a year (above interest rates or else there is no point investing in stocks and derivates). Cumulative growth ,therefore, should have been 1.05 to the power 8 * 10.500 = 15.540 after Bush. Now including inflation (!) that is a staggering loss of 50-80%. Congrats. Economics used to be the prime subject of the Reps. Now it’s only Christianism, morale thumping and power politics left over.

They have actually started to believe in the false propaganda and FUD tactics of the Republican party. That is so sad, don’ t you think?

  14. Dallas, there is nothing wrong with the way you said the number, but since we’re not expert in this, we lack the insight and the number seems awfully good in comparison to reality. Since I’m neither an expert nor an economist, I’m looking closer to home. I invest a lot on my 401K (a way to shelter my income), and since I’m still young, I take high risk to yield high return, but the last couple of years, instead of high return, I have had only high lost (here I’m not looking at the Dow Jones number) Also, many jobs in this area moved overseas or were forced to shut down, some of the small towns in this area look like a ghost town, and these people worked here all their lives, many are fear of losing their home and some that I know already lost their home, and many are up for sale, it’s very sad to look at, and for some they’re helpless.

I can’t say that the overall business is doing well, especially business in our area. As for me, I know I don’t want another 4 years of this. I’m a Buddhist, so the issue of Christianity doesn’t bother me, but our economy does bother me, war bothers me, and racist bothers me.

What we’re fearing most is change and we’re willing to stick with something that we’re familiar with, another 4 years of this, but I don’t expect it to be another 4 years of this, I expect it to be worse because people view the importance of things differently, people only protect what they love, you need to decide for yourself to protect of what you love most.

No where in either of her stories does it suggest a bias towards one party or another. Here coverage of these two conventions appears to be balanced and unbiased. The opinions expressed in the article were from the people she interviewed and not her own. I did sense a bit of a “you go girl” type sentiment in her writting with regards the recent selection of the republican VP nomination. Beyond that I though her coverage was fair. I am not sure where this Padek charecter lives but her in America people are free to make there own decisions and choices and vote for whom they see fit. All my fellow Lao vote as individuals and seem to follow the American norm. Young college tpyes in large cities and low income public assistance types lean democrate. Business owners and self sufficent individuals tend to lean republican. Also, I believe the correct word to describe Obama and his policies is “Socialist” not “Communist”. I believe Padek is just angry because the Lao community is finaly getting ahead in this country and much better off than we were 10 or 20 years ago as a whole.

  17. I’ll try to be less preachy, apologies to all.

We are bombarded with so much information it’s no wonder people have a hard time making informed choices. Political scientists tell us that most people don’t vote on the issues anyway, but more likely various emotional reasons. They say the single most likely predictor of voting is how our parents voted. Also outrage and negativity are important factors. If we hate someone chances are we won’t vote for them.

Countering those ideas is the thought that we are intelligent human beings with the ability to reason and come to conclusions based on facts and logic. We are able to change our minds and affiliations as circumstances dictate.

I have three non partisan recommendations to make, well maybe four. For the day to day accusations and counter accusations of misinformation or downright fibbing, (we seldom used to use the word lie) check out fact check dot org, both parties use it as a reference when it helps their cause, and ignore it when it doesn’t.

For most of us the Dow isn’t an indicator of our economic well being. We are more concerned with wages, (mostly flat when adjusted for inflation even among college educated), health care costs, (doubled) job security, percent in poverty, cost of living, cost of education and so on. (Over the past 8yrs)

The numbers on job creation can often be a better measure than unemployment. The population is increasing such that we have to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs just to remain in the same place. It looks as if Bush will settle out at around 5 million new jobs compared to Clintons 22 million.

For those of us who get our money via capital gains and the market, when Clinton began the Dow was at 3300 versus 10,600 when Bush took over, almost eight years later today it closed at about the same 10,609. Both presidents had peaks that were higher than what it ended up being. Bush at around 14K, Clinton at around 11.5K.

Today’s topic du jour was the Government bailout of AIG a private insurance and investment bank. The bailout was 85 billion, there are 300 million people in the US, we each paid around $283. There are four people in my family, together we invested $1133 in AIG. I don’t begrudge the money, I do realize it was necessary. The salt in the wound is that things didn’t have to be this way. A certain presidential candidate has pushed for banking deregulation his entire senate career. Before he ran for president he was most famous for being a POW and for being busted for a Savings in Loan scandal called the Keating Five. Google it.

Why deregulation is bad is because it’s like playing football without any referees. Eventually bedlam ensues. Both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission are the referees. Congress and the Pres took away most of their funding so they couldn’t keep track of the bad guys. They allowed the banks and investment houses to do all their business without oversight, and some folks cheated.

The war in Iraq alone is costing us about 10 billion a month, about $130 for my family.

Sorry to be long winded. In short things are one god awful mess, and they aren’t getting better quickly.

I personally don’t trust the folks that got us into this mess to get us out. I like that Harvard grad who turned down the Wall Street jobs to work in churches organizing relief for workers who lost their jobs in the steel mills. I like that calm thoughtful guy who is going to think long and hard before any adventurous wars. I would be reassured if Ms. Keodora did also.

  18. I’m from the Republican heartland, better known as Bob Dole’s state. Many people I know feel like their votes don’t count because for the national election, the state is leaning toward the Republican Party. For those of us that realized voting is more important in the local and state level, we get out and vote and demand change.

I don’t know how it is in the other states but in my neighborhood, people are losing their jobs left and right. It’s the same story like what Nye said about her area. The American dream of having a college degree to get you a good job doesn’t last long and you just might wake up too quickly. Two of my former classmates graduated in the top 1% of the class lost their jobs two years ago. One is an engineer that got a job with Black & Veatch and was living the life, then in 2006 the company downsized and he is now a Math substitute teacher at the local high school. The other worked for Sprint as it was expanding with a new world headquarter, then later decided to ship the jobs oversea. He is also a substitute teacher at the high school. These two were in the Young Republican Party club at the university. I wonder how they will vote this election.

Quite a number of Lao families also lost their jobs, mostly factory jobs and most of them had to move to other states to live with their relatives. It’s cheaper for these manufacturers to open a new factory in Vietnam or China, even hiring Mexicans or Laotians at minimum wage is too expensive for them in Kansas.

Tax has gone up and it keeps going up. Check your local taxes and check how much they cut on public services and education budget. My cousins have to pay a fee for taking the bus to school. It used to be free for taking the yellow school bus. They also have to pay for their own text books. Of course they came from Laos two years ago so they thought this is normal to pay for such fees in high school.

I find it hard to digest that we can’t even pay for our public school and yet have money to buy bullets to kill people over there so we don’t have to have a war here. War is expensive and we will be paying for it a long time, our children and grandchildren will be paying for a long time. It’s the “interest rate” that I am worried about.

Sarah Palin scares me. She is a heart beat away from the presidency with Mc Cain as president. I saw her interview on Dutch TV a few nights ago. She strikes me as someone that will push the red button.

It’s a shame that you would put people into ‘class’ and think that Lao people can’t think for themselves, and no, not all business owners and self sufficient individuals tend to lean toward republican, this type of remark only shows me that you’re in a class of your own regardless of who they put up there as a candidate, you will vote for that party because you think you belong to that ‘class’. So if you are Lao and want to ‘look’ like a business owner and self sufficient individual, then you must vote republican…that’s a joke, it’s like I have to be told, I can’t think for myself, to belong to this class I have to vote this way.

Where have I disputed the right to vote in the US? However, many Americans lack schooling and key insights to look through misinformation and propaganda. You won’t get this info from church, fox news or the local Mickey Mouse newspaper. How many Americans still really read in depth articles in newspapers?
Paying more taxes to finance wars and cuts in education will not do anything for Lao Americans. Contrary.Spraying hate on immigrants, a favorite pass time of Republicans, will backfire on Lao Americans. Do you think American white people are able to distinct you from a newcomer or even a Mexican for that matter? Don’t think so.

This must be Vannasone ;) Trying to tie great success to Republicans. Yes, a small percentage of white middle aged and rich groups will profit from your lack of electoral insight. Lao Americans will not. Take a look at the stats I posted. They are there for you to use.

Also, I believe the correct word to describe Obama and his policies is “Socialist” not “Communist”.

Also, I believe you make another attempt to stigmatize Obama with lies that have become common behavior in your “school” of thought. Although Obama is considered left wing in the US, he is still a far right liberal capitalist thinker to Europeans. Not even close to socialistic thinkers as they are present in Europe.

If you take a look at the section on Lao Diaspora, you can see the preference of the author.

For the coverage of the Republican Party, the article is titled Laotian-Americans Share Their Perspectives about Republican Presidential Tiket. The lead to the story is: Sarah Palin’s speech created a new wave and a wake up call for Republicans and Independence supporter as well ho are female and those that have a similar background.

There is a nice image of Mc Cain and Palin holding her fist to get your attention.

For the coverage of the Democratic Party, the article is titled Laotian-Americans Voice Their Opinions about the Up-Coming Presidential Election. The lead to the story is: American politics is the talk of the town and very crucial at this stage because the world is watching every step of the way any development in the up-coming presidential election.

There is no image of Obama but instead a general one of USA Votes 2008. If you go into the full story then you’ll see a picture of Mc Cain there along with Obama and Biden.

Euy Vannasone Keodara revealed her preference with her “editorial” statement in the second paragraph: The Hurricane Gustav their hits the southern part of United States also affected the Republican convention-opening day. During the convention, Sarah Palin accepted her nomination as a Vice President candidate that will run along with president John McCain. Sarah Palin’s speech created a new wave and a wake up call for many Independence and Democrat supporters who are female and those that have a similar background.

Those are her own words to describe the nomination of Palin and how she wrote up the coverage and selectively choosing these words as the lead to the story doesn’t hide the fact that she is pushing one candidate over the other.

Please know that I am not affiliated with a Democratic Party or the Republican Party. When I got my driver license and was asked to register either a Democrat or Republican, I chose the Independent voter box. I vote based on issues. I found that young college grads or college students tend to be Independent voters as well.

It would be nice to see a piece about Laotian American Independent voters and their opinions on which way they might lean toward to the two presidential candidates. It would even be tremendously helpful for the community to see an article on how many Laotian Americans are registered voters and the breakdown what parties they belonged to.

  27. Hi Nuk Hian,

Are you writing a general paper on democracy or about democracy in America? For a high school paper, it would be too much to examine the US Constitution.

If you are writing a paper on democracy as a general topic, you can define what democracy is, then list the type of democracy and talk about democracy in America. You can define American Federalism, then explain the division of powers between the National Government and State Governments. This is just a suggestion and you can do whatever you want really, it’s your paper. You just need to have a focus and make a diagram of your topic.

A good book to read is Government by the People by Burns, Peltason, Cronin, Magleby, O’Brien, and Light. It might be too much for you though. We used it for our introductory course to Democracy in America.

  28. Nuk Hian,

Voting for Obama because he is cool and hot would be two bad reasons to vote for him. Look at his program for change, the people that he surrounds himself with and his general vision of the future. Then compare this to the equivalents of the Republican party and make the most rational and educated choice possible for your own future.

Please also note that even the judicial branch of the US is created along partisan lines, especially in the supreme court since the Bork incident. Republicans prefer conservative judges, Democrats tend to vote for supreme court judges with more liberal views. In my view there is a high degree of influence and dependence between the Judicial and executive/legislative powers. Supreme court judges are appointed in highly political processes.

  29. Are there any historic documents that I can reference Democracy in the forming or creation of the United States? I want to write about the beginning of Democracy in the US but unable to find any reference or the used of the word Democracy. I know there are a lot of reference to the word Today and in books written recently.

Ai Padek, Should we blame just Bush or Both Congress and Bush for the economy?

  30. Hi Nuk Hian,

Check out Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville. It is rather a heavy piece of work for high school student. It was a required text for my major in Political Science for the course Democracy in America (freshman year).

The Library of Congress is a good site to bookmark as a student.

Your best source should be your school library or your local public library. You can access many electronic data. With a library card you can search for info from home.

The best tip I can give is for your to be organize and know what you are looking for. Searching aimlessly on the internet will not help you much. Of course, you should always ask your teacher for a good reference on your topic and then a librarian to help you find what you are looking for. It will make your life easier.

  31. Thanks Darly,

My request was very specific on my search. I am looking for Historical documents. I have finished my paper.

I feel like your website is full of Elsworth Toohey character from “The Fountain Head” by Ayn Rand. Lots of talk around in circle. I really got confused here.

    Best Wishes to LV.

  33. Nuk Hian, I teach Advanced Placement U.S. History and I have juniors. Go to course-notes.org especially if your are taking AP classes. There are historical documents, practice quizzes, notes and court cases. The site was created by Chris, who was a student. My students find this site helpful. In fact they use it for their other advanced classes like math, psychology etc. Also, you can go to my class website: kofapush.wordpress.com if you want more links for history. By the way there is a scholarship for “The Fountain Head” by Ayd Rand. One of my students is applying for it. You should too! :) Good luck and you should be proud of yourself for taking college courses. I know it is stressful because my students are doing the same thing.

    Padek lesson 1: Accusing someone of discussing in circles is not a compliment;
Padek lesson 2: Boasting you are doing college leaves me the question: why do you request us to hold your hand answering semi scientific questions?
Padek advice 3: a blog is not a scientific or scholarly source. Your teachers should have instructed you better.

    Good luck though ;)

  35. Ai Padek,

    Again,

Did you read the threads? Darly was trying to help me and I just tried to inform her that I this was a college course. I am in High School in advanced placement classes. I am Lao. I thought Master Darly would have an insight to it and you seemed knowledgeable. Maybe NOT! I have been reading the threads. You are mean! I and like most Laotians with no educations would find you Ai Padek very offensive. We real Laotians do not talked/typed like that. Nee Sai boh dee! I guest it’s OKAY, because this site is based in Netherland and not Laos. Good Bye and very disappointed.

  36. Hi Nuk Hian,

If you were expecting for me to type out a bibliography for you, then of course you would be disappointed. Learning how to search for quality sources should be one of your main academic skills and not expecting others to spoon feed you the answers.

I told you to check your local library. For example my local library has a Research Resources page, where a list of topics can be found. For history topic, there is link to a website where you can find Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents.

Let’s be honest, you just want a quick answer without putting much effort on your part. To make it worse, you came looking for an answer at a blog site. I pointed you to the right direction, but you have to get there yourself.

  37. Nuk hian, I know that Padek can be mean, you’re not telling me (us) anything new, you fend for yourself around here.

I don’t know, but somehow I have a feeling that you are not who you said you are, and your intention is something else, more like coming in here to insult, you are not bad yourself with your word twist, and appear to know too much about us for a passerby. The 3 lessons/advice that he mentioned, I thought of the same thing earlier, part of learning is doing research, your teacher(or the person that put you up to this) should have told you this, I find some of your comments very insulting as well.

It is obvious by the title of this post that it’s not a good source for any research paper.

  38. I guess I am late to this party. Even if you think your vote doesn’t matter, it does matters. Be a part of the solution, be heard and go out and vote. And if you don’t want to stand in line, absentee ballots are the best.

For our dear Nuk Hian - I am sorry to say, but Padek is right. “Accusing someone of discussing in circles is not a compliment.”

It’s funny that Nuk Hian found Padek to have “Nee Sai boh dee” (bad personality). But do you know Padek personally? I say he gives all of us a wake up call every now and then.

A great show I like is “Kitchen Nigthmare” with chef Gordon Ramsay. He goes into floundering restaurants and analyzes what works and what doesn’t right away. He may not have the nicest way of saying things, but he’s always fair. And he has to deal with the owners who are oblivious to their own failures. They are usually egomaniacs too. And in the end, they wake up from their little world and things work out OK.

Basically, we can’t always walk around on eggshells, there are far more productive ways of doing things. And welcome to Lao Voices! :)
