Since Pha That Luang was built by King Say Setthathirath in 1566, who made Vientiane as the capital of Lan Xang, That Luang Festival goers would pay tribute to the legendary leader by offering flowers, lighting candles and saying their prayers around his statue. To this day, Chao Say Setthathirath is still considered one of the greatest leader in the history of Laos.
