MOIC organises workshop on gender equality

( KPL- 17.11.09 ) The Lao National Commission for the Advancement of Women of the Ministry of Information and Culture held a workshop on gender and equality between women and men, on Friday and its objective is to contribute to national development and building.

This workshop was chaired by Mr Boua-ngeun Saphouvong, President of the Lao National Commission for the Advancement of Women, Ministry Information and Culture.

The other people who attended were the representative of the Lao Women’s Union, Head of the Secretariat Unit of the Lao National Commission for the Advancement of Women and leading officials of the ministry.

The workshop attempted to articulate and define the role of the Lao National Commission for the Advancement of Women of this Ministry.The participants discussed various topics, such as promoting the advancement of women in Laos and at the international level, the inclusion of gender equality into the information and mass media channels, the national strategy plan on advancement for women for the years 2006-2010, the basic rights of women and promotion of equal education for women and children.

The participants also discussed the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, signed by the Lao government in 1980 and it was a party to its ratification in 1981.

In the convention are three principles, gender equality, the principle of unity between women and men and duty to state.
