To improve conditions for local farmers, especially in the dry season, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has built a 10km irrigation canal in Phonhong district, Vientiane province.

“Korea had a similar experience in the past in building up infrastructure for agricultural productivity, as part of efforts for the social and economic development process,” KOICA Vice President Ahn Dong-Won said.
“It is important that villagers actively participate in the maintenance process,” he added.
KOICA believes the project will increase incomes and productivity in this area, with farmers harvesting two crops a year.
In addition to the Phonhong district irrigation canal project, KOICA is now in the process of constructing a dam and another irrigation canal in Mun district. A feasibility study for building a small scale dam in Hinheup district is also underway.
A handover ceremony for the canal was held on November 25 in Phonghong district.
The ceremony was attended by Mr Ahn Dong-Won, Governor of Vientiane province Khammeung Phongthady, and KOICA Laos Office Resident Representative Sung Choon-Kiand.
