Road Safety campaigns encourage people to drive safely

The Traffic Police department in collaboration with Lao Telecom Company held a road safety activities campaign aiming to promote road safety. According to the Traffic Police, number of road accidents increased nationwide in particularly 7 days prior and after Boun Pii Mai Lao celebration.

The campaign to promote road safety was conducted at Patuxay Monument with Director General of the Traffic Police Department of Vientiane Capital. According to the Traffic police, this year, traffic police are distributing road safety information and traffic regulations in public places, especially at markets, the National University of Laos, and Chao Anouvong stadium.

Director General of the Traffic Police Department, Lieutenant Colonel Khamthavai Phet-outhai said, the aim is to motivate road users to be more careful and strictly follow the regulations in order to reduce the number of accidents despite the rising number of vehicles in the capital. The campaign included a question and answer game with the winners receiving a crash helmet.

It is recorded that, In 2012, some 6,146 road accidents occurred nationwide, down 6 percent compared to 2011. The number of fatalities in 2012 was 888, down only 1.5 percent compared to 2011. Drinking and driving, driving too fast, and failure to obey the traffic regulations are the main causes of road accidents in Laos. During this Lao New Year, the Traffic Police Department will cooperate with the Transport Department of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to facilitate traffic flow in the capital.

The Traffic Police Department will also assign more than 700 officers to areas that have a high risk of road accidents, especially at T-junctions and intersections in the capital’s nine districts.
