Deputy Minister of Investment and Planning, Dr. Samaychanh Boupha, calls for support to help with the $6.2 million USD initiative in technical and financial support from international organizations for the 4th Population and Housing Census, which are scheduled for the 3rd of March 2015.
According to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, and head of the Lao Statistics Bureau, Dr. Samaychanh Boupha, the Population and Housing Census is the biggest and most important survey for Lao PDR, because it will assess our progress towards our socio-economic development goals by examining the population’s growth.
A pilot census is scheduled on March 1, 2014, while the actual census will take place one year later, where it will cover the population in the Provincial, District and village level, and will serve as a benchmark for the country’s detail demographic population, socio-cultural and economic characteristics. The preliminary result of the census is expected to be released in mid 2015 with the final result will be released in early 2016.
In preparation for the census, the Lao Statistics Bureau or LSB, of the Ministry of Planning and Investment held a forum recently in Vientiane Capital, which was attended by United Nations Population Fund Agency, or UNFPA Representative to Lao PDR, Dr. Esther Muia, Government officials, development partners, donors and stakeholders, where they are called to work together and provide both technical and financial support to ensure a quality and successful Population and Housing Census in 2015.
