OXFAM Novib has extended support to the Lao Women’s Union: OXFAM Novib has extended support to the Lao Women’s Union to promote gender equality

Introduction: OXFAM Novib has extended support to the Lao Women’s Union to begin a project promoting women’s involvement in environmental protection as well as gender equality in mining and hydropower.

STORY: Officially titled “Strengthening Women’s Capacity Building in Environmental Protection and Gender Equality in the Mining and Hydropower Section”, the project will be implemented in target districts of various provinces.

At an estimated cost of more than US$223,000, it is expected the project will be launched this month following the MoU signing ceremony.

The timeframe for the project is three years, from March 2015 to February 2018. The Lao Women’s Development Department will oversee the project.

The project aims for Lao women to play a greater role in planning and decision making in their local communities, promote gender equality and greater opportunities for women as well as contribute to poverty reduction initiatives.

The MoU was signed in Vientiane by Executive Committee Member of the Lao Women’s Union and Director General of the Lao Women’s Development Department, Sirikit Boupha, and Associate Country Director of OXFAM, Antonino Faibene.
