Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong instructs the Ministry to revise the national policy on ICT

Introduction: Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong has instructed the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to revise the national policy on information and communication technology or ICT in an attempt to advance the sector.

Story: Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong issued the instruction during the ministry’s annual meeting, which reviewed work undertaken in 2014 and the plan for 2015. The two-day meeting ended in Vientiane on Tuesday the 17th of March.

Premiere Thongsing asked the ministry to draw up a national broadband policy, formulate a practical five-year plan for the years 2016-2020, and devise a strategy for the sector until 2025.

These measures would serve as instruments for the industrialisation and modernisation of Laos.

Referring to the plan to launch Laos’ first satellite into orbit this year to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (December 2, 1975-2015), Premiere Thongsing asked the ministry to speed up work so the satellite is launched in November as planned.

The prime minister advised provincial authorities to ensure their staff received more training in the use of computers and other equipment so they could maximise the benefits of advanced technology.

Telecommunications operators, who were also present at the meeting, were urged to invest more in expanding networks into rural communities and training ICT staff so they were qualified to provide better services.
