The message read: “On the occasion of the National Day of the Swiss Confederation, on behalf of the people of Laos, I would like to convey to Your Excellency and through Your Excellency to the Swiss people, my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes.

I am confident that the ties of friendship and sound cooperation between our two countries will be continuously strengthened in the future in the interest of our two peoples and that of peace, stability as well as development cooperation.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith also sent his own message of congratulation to his Swiss counterpart, Didier Burkhalter, in celebration of the same occasion.

Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. This alliance was to become the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years.
