Introduction: Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Hiem Phommachanh, was speaking at the ministry’s ongoing annual meeting in Vientiane that, Video conference facilities are not being used, despite the government’s huge investment in installing a network connecting ministries and provinces.

Story: Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Hiem Phommachanh, admitted that the system had been installed and equipment distributed but was not being used. He made the comment at the ministry’s ongoing annual meeting in Vientiane, in response to an inquiry by participants who noted that the facilities were not being properly used despite the large investment.

The Minister said he had learnt that regulations should be formulated to stipulate what kind of meetings could be and must be held via video conferencing adding that, although the system is installed and the equipment distributed, it will be useless if state departments do not make use of it.

Official confirmed that the system had been connected to all provinces and video conferencing between provincial and ministerial departments could take place.

The system was not actively used in Laos, while other Asean members were far ahead in this respect. Representatives from various ministries attended the meeting.
